Rowing – Puffing Island Race

Beaumaris Rowing Club invites you to take part in the sixth Puffin Island Race for WSRA Celtic Longboats and sea-going fixed-seat rowing boats.  The crews will row from the historic town of Beaumaris, along the scenic Menai Strait, around the majestic Puffin Island and back through the challenging Puffin Sound to return to Beaumaris. The record time for the race was set by Aberdyfi Men in 2015: 1 hr 22 min 11 secs.

The Puffin Island Race will be held on SATURDAY 7th of May over the
10-mile course. Closing date to register for the race is Monday 2nd of MAY

At the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club:

  • Registration: From 8.00 am
  • Tea & coffee and bacon & sausage baps on sale from 8.00am
  • Coxes Briefing: 8.45 am
  • Start:9.30 am from the RAYC line Finish: RAYC line
  • RAYC downstairs bar opens at 8 am
  • After the race lunch is served upstairs- in the Mary Burton Suite Free to competitors
  • Supporters – please buy lunch token @ £6 from registration desk by 8.00 am
  • Followed by results & presentation of prizes

Please note that the race will start on time so that boats can row through Puffin Sound at slack water.

Notes

  1. SAFETY EQUIPMENT ON THE WATER
    Each crew has a collective responsibility to ensure their boat is seaworthy, carries a sturdy tow rope and as a minimum has at least one large bailer, first aid kit, survival blankets, throw bag, plus suitable personal protective equipment for expected conditions which must also include a life jacket or buoyancy aid for each crew member.
    A working VHF radio and a whistle is mandatory, each boat carries a fully charged mobile phone within a waterproof pouch, number, and name to be given during registration. (If you need to borrow a vhf, please contact the Race Secretary in advance.) Spot checks may be undertaken prior to launch.

  1. The first aid station is at the RAYC Club
  2. No crew rotation is allowed during the race.
  3. Please park and unload trailers on the Stones area of Beaumaris Green. All tow vehicles are required by the Town Council to park on the main part of the Green and to buy a £5 parking ticket. There is free parking available on the street, but Beaumaris can be very busy
