Beaumaris Crews in London Marathon Row

Beaumaris Rowing Club, part of the RAYC, sent two crews of six rowers in their Celtic Longboats to compete in the annual Great River Race on the River Thames on Saturday 2nd September.

The two crews battled strong winds and rough water during the 21.6 miles row from the Isle of Dogs to Richmond and finished in a creditable time of under three hours. The ages of the crew members varied from 18 to 80 years of age!

The Great River Race attracted 331 crews from all over UK and Europe rowing a huge variety of boats from Irish canvas-hulled curraghs to enormous Dutch rowing life-boats and powerful Cornish gigs.

All these boats had to squeeze through designated arches of the many bridges and this led to collisions and clashes of oars. An exciting day out for all concerned!
