Two members of the RAYC have been selected in the North Wales squad just a year after youth sailing was re-started at the RAYC.
Megan Elias and Robin Scanlan, two junior members of the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club in Beaumaris, have been selected for the North Wales Regional RS Feva sailing squad and are taking part in winter sailing training between November and March alongside the Welsh RS Feva sailing squad.
The Royal Anglesey is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the UK having received its Royal Charter in 1887, with a full racing programme from May to September as well as social and development activities during the off season.
The RAYC has recently re-started its youth sailing in Beaumaris thanks to a generous grant from Sport Wales, while Anglesey firm Peninsula Home Improvements helped with the cost of the girl’s kit.
Stevie Scanlan, vice-commodore of the RAYC, said, “We are so pleased that all the hard work in re-starting youth sailing has paid off so soon. The popularity of the weekly sailing lessons here in Beaumaris has been unprecedented and shows the local enthusiasm for sailing and the desire for local children to connect with the water.”
Peninsula Home Improvements, based in Gaerwen, Anglesey, were pleased to help with Ken Grayson, CEO of Peninsula Windows, adding, “Our company was thrilled to be able to help Robin and Megan with their sailing and we look forward to seeing them progress during the winter training camps.
“As a company we are very keen to help support local sports and, as we are based here on Anglesey, it is great to have a connection to the sea.
“As a business we are all about helping people keep their properties dry and cosy so it just seems fitting to help kit out the girls and keep them warm when out on the water.”
Robin and Megan will be sailing in the RS Feva class alongside other junior sailors from Llandudno Sailing Club, Pwllheli Sailing Club and Rydal Penrhos School.
The Welsh High Performance Manager Paul Simes commented, “This year we selected an all-girls team for the North Wales Regional Feva Squad and we cannot wait to see how they get on next season and hopefully in the Welsh National RS Feva Squad next winter.”
